About Forest of Steles
The Forest of Steles is one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units (No. 1 in the stone carving category), a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction, and one of the 18 special tourist attractions in the country. It is the earliest collection of ancient Chinese steles and the largest collection of famous steles in the Han culture and art treasure house. It is located at No. 15 Sanxue Street, Beilin District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province. The origin of the forest of steles can be traced back to the "Shitai Filial Sutra" and "Kaicheng Stone Sutra" that were established in the Imperial Academy of Wubenfang, Chang'an, the imperial capital in the Tang Dynasty. The official founder was Lu Dazhong, a famous official in the Northern Song Dynasty (from Lantian, Shaanxi Province). It was built in the second year of Yuanyou (1087) in the Northern Song Dynasty.
