About Sanyou Cave
Sanyou Cave Cliff, also called Sanyou Cave, is located on a cliff beside the Yangtze River about 7 kilometers northwest of Yichang City, Hubei Province. It is a cultural relic from the Tang Dynasty to the Republic of China. In the 14th year of Yuanhe of the Tang Dynasty (819), Bai Juyi, Bai Xingjian and Yuan Zhen met in Yiling (now Yichang, Hubei Province). They visited the cave together and each composed a poem. Bai Juyi also wrote the "Preface to Sanyou Cave" on the cave wall, from which Sanyou Cave got its name. The terrain of Sanyou Cave is steep, and the cave is open and irregular in shape. It is a limestone cave formed by the continuous dissolution of ancient groundwater along the rock surface and collapse. The geological age of its strata is the Cambrian, about 500 million to 600 million years ago. The rocks in the cave are undulating and fractured vertically and horizontally.
