About karez
Qanat is an underground conservancy project created by the working people in arid lands during the long historical development. The karez diverted groundwater and turned the desert into an oasis. It was called "well canal" in ancient times. The main working principle of the karez is that people use the natural slope of the mountain to draw a large amount of rainwater, glaciers and snowmelt water that seeps into the ground in spring and summer to the surface for irrigation to meet the production and living water needs in desert areas. The specific structure of karez in different regions has different regional characteristics, but generally speaking, a complete karez system includes four main components: vertical shafts, culverts (underground channels), open channels (surface channels) and waterlogging dams (small reservoirs).
