About Luohan Hall

Arhat Hall is a hall in a Buddhist temple dedicated to Arhats. Its name comes from the teachings of Theravada Buddhism that practitioners achieve the "Arahant Fruit". Common worship combinations include Sixteen Arhats, Eighteen Arhats and Five Hundred Arhats. Among them, the Eighteen Arhats add the Dragon-subduing Arhat Kasyapa and the Tiger-subduing Arhat Maitreya to the Sixteen Arhats. Larger temples have permanent Arhat halls to enshrine the statues of Arhats. There is no fixed regulation for the five hundred Arhats due to the general custom of ancient India. There were originally 508 wooden and gold-lacquered Arhat statues in the Deluo Han Hall in Chengdu, Hebei Province. After being damaged by wars and fires, only about 170 statues remain. Some Arhat halls, such as Huayan Temple, are divided into two halls to worship the sixteen Arhats.
