About Yungang Grottoes Open-air Buddha
The open-air Buddha of Yungang Grottoes is located in Cave 20 of Yungang Grottoes at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain and on the north bank of Shili River, 16 kilometers west of Datong City, Shanxi Province. The open-air Buddha of Yungang Grottoes is about 13.7 meters high. The open-air Buddha sits on a stone pedestal, with broad shoulders and a tall and strong figure. The Buddha has a square face, a straight nose, big ears and shoulders, and a slightly majestic smile at the corner of his mouth. The thick right shoulder-baring cassock on the Buddha's body seems to be made of fine wool material, with obvious drape, which enhances the three-dimensional effect. The backlight decoration behind the Buddha is even more meticulous. The headlight is a circular relief with a flame pattern. The backlight is in the shape of a boat, decorated with exquisite patterns such as lotuses.
