About Shangri-La Grand Canyon

Shangri-La Grand Canyon, also known as Balage Zong, is located in the northwest of Shangri-La City, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, 58 kilometers away from the urban area. It is named after one end of the canyon is named "Shangge" and the other end is named "Lila". The average altitude of the canyon is more than 3,000 meters, the wall height is more than 1,000 meters, the widest point is about 80 meters, and the narrowest point is only more than 10 meters. The canyon is speculated to be the prototype of the Blue Moon Canyon in "Lost Horizon". It includes core areas such as Birong Canyon and Balagezong Snow Mountain (5,545 meters above sea level). The Gangqu River runs through the bottom of the valley, and is dotted with terracotta immortal caves, shouting springs, gold mine ruins, rock paintings and Tibetan Buddhist temple ruins and other cultural landscapes.
