About Basilica of Our Lady of She Shan
The Basilica of Our Lady of Sheshan, also known as Sheshan Catholic Church, is located on the top of Sheshan Mountain in the west of Sheshan National Forest Park. The church was built by French missionaries in 1871 and completed in 1935. It is mainly in the European Baroque style, integrating Greek, Roman, Gothic and other architectural arts. In 1942, it was consecrated as a pontifical temple by the Pope of Rome and enjoys the reputation of "the first church in the Far East". The construction of the church originated from the votive donations after the Tianjin Mission Case in 1870. It was expanded in 1925 and was designed by Belgian priest He Genbai. Portuguese Ye Zhaochang was responsible for the detailed design. The project lasted ten years and was completed in 1935. In 1989, Sheshan Catholic Church was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Shanghai.
