About LonghuaTemple
Longhua Temple is located in Longhua Street, Xuhui District, Shanghai. It is the oldest and largest ancient temple in Shanghai. It covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters, with a construction area of 5,219 square meters. It is 194 meters long along the central axis. It is lined with six halls, including the Maitreya Hall, the Heavenly King Hall, the Main Hall, the Three Holy Halls, the Abbot's Room and the Sutra Collection Building. The name of Longhua Temple comes from the allusion in Buddhist scriptures about Maitreya Bodhisattva becoming a Buddha under the Longhua tree. It is said that Longhua Temple was built by Sun Quan for his mother during the Three Kingdoms period, more than 1,700 years ago. However, there are documented records that Longhua Temple was built in the second year of Taiping and Xingguo in the Northern Song Dynasty (977 AD).
