About Middle Binyang Cave
Binyang Middle Cave is located on the west mountain of Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang City, Henan Province. "Binyang" means welcoming the rising sun. The cave was excavated in the early Jingming Dynasty (500 AD) of Emperor Xuanwu of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Emperor Xuanwu built the Gongde Grotto for his father, Emperor Xiaowen. It lasted 24 years and employed a total of more than 800,000 people. Due to the influence of the palace coup and war in the Northern Wei Dynasty, of the three caves originally planned to be built, only the main statue in the middle cave was completed, and the south and north caves were completed in the early Tang Dynasty. The cave is in the shape of a horseshoe, with a lotus caisson and a relief sculpture of Jile Tian carved in the center of the dome. The main image is the theme of the Third Buddha, with a total of 11 large images.
