About The Longmen Grottoes 12
The Longmen Grottoes are located in Luoyang City, Henan Province. They are the world’s largest repository of stone carvings, boasting the highest number of statues and the most extensive scale of any stone carving art site. They were designated by UNESCO as “the pinnacle of Chinese stone carving art,” ranking first among China’s major grottoes. Longmen was carved by Yu the Great during his reign in flood control; the legend of the Fish Leaping Over the Dragon Gate also originated here. The grottoes were excavated around the time when Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty moved the capital to Luoyang in 493 AD, underwent large-scale expansions during the Tang Dynasty, and saw the addition of wooden structures during the Song Dynasty.
