About Tropenmuseum

The Tropical Museum (Dutch: Tropenmuseum) is an anthropological museum located in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. It was established in 1864 at Linnaeusstraat 2, 1092 CK Amsterdam. This museum is one of the largest museums in Amsterdam and is now part of the Netherlands Museum of World Cultures. Its predecessor was the Colonial Museum established in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1824, and moved to Amsterdam in the 1920s. When it opened, it mainly displayed the assets and residents of the Dutch overseas colonies, and later gradually expanded its focus on social issues. In March 2014, the museum merged with the Dutch Museum of Ethnology and the Museum of Africa to become the Dutch Museum of World Cultures. Since 2015, the museum has launched an intervention project called "Decolonizing the Museum" to re-examine its colonial history and narrative.
