About saint nicholas church

St. Nicholas Church is located on the east side of Dongzhimen North Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing. It is the first Orthodox church in the history of Beijing. Its history can be traced back to 1685. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, in order to house the Russian prisoners of war in the Yaksa Battle, a Guandi Temple in Hujiayuan Hutong, Dongzhimen, was set aside as a temporary prayer place. It was called "Rakshasa Temple" or "Beiguan" among the people. After 1689, the Russian Diocese officially named it St. Nicholas Church (also known as St. Sophia Church). The church was destroyed in 1900 and later rebuilt and renamed "Fatal Church". In 1956, the Beijing Orthodox Church announced its dissolution, and the original church complex was handed over to the Soviet Embassy in China, and was converted into the new Soviet Embassy in China from 1956 to 1959.
