About Short Memorial Hall
The Short Memorial Hall is located in Fucao Port, Wuditan, Wusong River, Suzhou City. It is now part of Gaodian Village, Xietang Street, Suzhou Industrial Park. It was built to commemorate the American pilot Robert Short who died in the Suzhou air battle in 1932. There is currently a memorial hall and a monument. It is a cultural relics protection unit in Suzhou City and a patriotism education base in Suzhou City. On February 22, 1932, Short piloted a Boeing fighter plane in a fierce battle with six Japanese aircraft over Suzhou. After shooting down an enemy plane, his plane was shot and fell into the Wusong River and died. He became the first foreign pilot to sacrifice his life for China's anti-Japanese war. In July of the same year, all walks of life in Wuxian County raised funds to erect a 3-meter-high granite obelisk at the place where he was martyred.
