About Humble Administrator’s Garden 2
The Humble Administrator’s Garden, located at No. 178 Northeast Street, Gusu District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, covers an area of 78 mu (52,000 square meters). Together with Beijing’s Summer Palace, Chengde’s Mountain Resort, and Suzhou’s Liyuan, the Humble Administrator’s Garden is renowned as one of China’s Four Great Gardens. Construction of the Humble Administrator’s Garden began in the fourth year of the Zhengde reign during the Ming Dynasty (1509), founded by Wang Xianchen, a jinshi who passed the imperial examinations during the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty and served as a censor during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty. He commissioned the renowned painter Wen Zhengming, a leading figure of the Wu School of Painting, to participate in the design blueprint. The garden took 16 years to complete.
