About Wind Of May
"Wind of May" is the iconic sculpture in May Fourth Square in Qingdao, Shandong Province. It was created by Huang Zhen. It is 30 meters high, 27 meters in diameter and weighs more than 500 tons. It is the largest steel urban sculpture in my country. The sculpture adopts a spiral steel plate structure, and the outer layer is spray-painted fiery red, resembling a strong wind shape, symbolizing the spirit of the May Fourth Movement. Designer Huang Zhen was inspired by a gust of wind on the sea, thinking of the May 4th thunderstorms and the small whirlwind in the fields of his hometown. The sculpture is free and open all year round, and together with the surrounding seascape and gardens, it forms the core landscape of May Fourth Square.
