About Tianhou Temple

The Tianhou Palace in Nansha, Guangzhou, also known as the “Mazu Temple,” is located at No. 88 Tianhou Road, Nansha District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. Situated at the southeastern foot of Mount Dajiao, it lies at the heart of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area and borders the Lingding Ocean, the estuary of the Pearl River. The temple covers an area of 180,000 square meters. The predecessor of the Tianhou Palace in Nansha, Guangzhou, was the ancient Tianfei Temple built in Lujing Village during the Ming Dynasty. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the temple underwent extensive renovations and was officially named the Yuanjun Ancient Temple. It was destroyed by Japanese aircraft during the War of Resistance Against Japan, but was later rebuilt in 1994.
