About Huayan nunnery

Huayan Nunnery is located directly north of the gate of Mochou Lake Park in Jianye District, Nanjing City. Its name comes from the Buddhist classic "Huayan Sutra". It is one of the park attractions and a cultural relic protection unit in Jianye District. It was first built in the early Ming Dynasty by Xu Da, King of Zhongshan. In the early years of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty, monks began to practice Taoism. Li Yaodong rebuilt it in the fifty-eighth year of Qianlong's reign (1793). It was destroyed by war in the Xianfeng period. It was rebuilt by Zeng Guofan in the third year of Tongzhi (1864). It was moved and rebuilt in 1959. The existing nunnery has a facade of three rooms, with a brick and wood structure in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The main door hangs a couplet inscribed by Lu Hongji in the third year of the Republic of China.
