About Granny Shi

Grandma Shi's name is Ruiniang, whose real surname is Wang. She was a maid (also a wet nurse) in the family of Chen Di, the Minister of Rites during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. He was revered for his righteous deeds of risking his life to save orphans and raise them after the "Jingnan Campaign". After his death, he was worshiped as the "God of Mercy". Because his statue was made of stone, he was affectionately called "Stone Granny". In the fourth year of Jianwen (1402), King Zhu Di of Yan invaded Nanjing and Chen Di was killed. Ruiniang hid Chen Di's five-month-old son Chen Zhu and rescued him. He then fled with him, traveling to the outskirts of Nanjing and Zouxian County, Shandong Province, and was finally dispatched to Penglai County, Dengzhou Prefecture (today's Penglai City, Shandong Province). In Penglai, Ruiniang went through many hardships to raise Chen Zhu.
