About seaweed house
Seaweed houses are traditional dwellings in the coastal areas of the Jiaodong Peninsula. They are characterized by natural stone walls and seagrass thatch roofs. They are mainly distributed in Weihai, Yantai and other places. Its roof is made of shallow-sea macrophylla, which is sun-dried and laid layer by layer, and reinforced with wheat straw. It has the characteristics of being warm in winter and cool in summer, and fire-proof and moisture-proof. In 2006, it was listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Shandong Province. The relatively complete existing building clusters are concentrated in Dongchudao Village and Yandunjiao Village in Rongcheng City. Some houses are more than 300 years old. This architectural form can be traced back to the Neolithic Age.
