About Couple's Retreat Garden

Coupling Garden, formerly known as Sheyuan, is located at No. 6, Xiaoxin Lane, Neicang Street, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. It was built in the early Qing Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, a garden was built on the east and west sides of the house, hence the name "Coupling Garden". The original meaning of "couple" is that two people farm side by side, and later it was extended to mean husband and wife or couple. The landscapes, flowers, trees, pavilions and corridors in the couple garden reflect the beauty of pairs, husband and wife. Three sides of the garden face the river and one side is along the street. The total area of the garden is about 8,000 square meters. The layout of the coupling garden is centered on the house with four entrance halls, and the east and west gardens are connected to the residence by double buildings.
