About Guangfumen
Guangfu Gate is an ancient city gate in Wuxi. It was first built in April 1912. It was specially opened to facilitate transportation between the Shanghai-Nanjing Railway Station built in 1908 and the city. Its name means "driving out the Tartars and regaining China" to commemorate the liberation of Wuxi during the Revolution of 1911, so it is also called the New North Gate. On April 23, 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation Army entered Wuxi City through this gate, marking the liberation of Wuxi. The original Guangfu Gate was demolished along with the city wall in 1951. What we see today was rebuilt in 2008. It is located opposite the Wuxi Railway Station and has become part of the "Lights in Front of the Station" themed landscape area of the ancient canal around the city and a red education base.
