About laomendong
Laomendong (East Zhonghua Gate Historical Culture Block) is located east of Zhonghua Gate, Qinhuai District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. It is a historical and cultural block in Nanjing. It is called "Mendong" because it is located east of the South Gate of Nanjing City (i.e., Zhonghua Gate). Opposite Laomenxi, it is an important part of the Qinhuai scenery belt of Nanjing Confucius Temple. Historically, it was one of the most developed commercial and residential areas in Nanjing, covering an area of about 150,000 square meters. In Laomendong, a row-type street layout was formed during the Three Kingdoms period. During the Ming Dynasty, the South City Gate Jubao Gate (later known as the Zhonghua Gate) developed and prospered, basically retaining the traditional style and pattern of the streets in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
