About Former Residence of General Marshall
The former site of the Marshall Mansion is located at No. 5 Ninghai Road, Gulou District, Nanjing. It was originally a villa built by Jincheng Bank in 1935. It was designed by Tong Huan and later purchased as a mansion by Zhang Qun, who was the foreign minister of the Nationalist Government at the time. It was later donated to the German Embassy. After the Japanese occupation of Nanjing in December 1937, the headquarters of the International Committee for the Nanjing Safety Zone was used as the headquarters for the rescue of refugees. Because of the luxurious facilities in the building at that time, Rabe, then chairman of the committee, called it "our palace". The words "No. 5 Ninghai Road" also often appeared in the committee reports and letters included in "Rabe's Diary".
