About Shuyuanmen

Academy Gate is a cultural pedestrian street on the east side of the south gate of Beilin District, Xi'an City. It reaches Anju Lane in the east and connects to Sanxue Street. It is named after the Guanzhong Academy in the street. The academy was founded by Feng Congwu, a scholar of the Ming Dynasty, in the 37th year of Wanli Dynasty (1609). Feng Congwu resigned from office due to his defeat in the struggle against the eunuchs and gave lectures here. He was later persecuted and died on a hunger strike. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Guanzhong Academy was one of the four major academies in the northwest. It was rebuilt in the third year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1664). In the 29th year of Guangxu (1903), it was converted into Shaanxi Normal School. In the first year of Xuantong (1909), it was renamed Shaanxi Normal University.
