About Forest of Stone Steles Museum
Xi'an Beilin Museum is located at No. 15, Sanxue Street, Beilin District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province. It was founded in 1944 and is the earliest museum established in Shaanxi. Its origin can be traced back to the Forest of Steles in Xi'an with a history of more than 900 years. The Forest of Steles in Xi'an was built in the second year of Yuanyou (1087) of the Northern Song Dynasty to preserve the Tang Dynasty's "Kaicheng Stone Classic", "Shitai Xiao Jing" and famous calligraphy steles by Yan Zhenqing, Liu Zongyuan and others. It was moved to its current location in the second year of Chongning (1103). After generations of repairs and additions, the scale continued to expand, and the stone collection increased day by day. It was eventually built into a thematic art museum that mainly collects, studies and displays steles, epitaphs and stone sculptures from past dynasties.
