About South Study
The South Study Room was an inner court institution established in the 16th year of Kangxi's reign (1677) in the Qing Dynasty. It is located southwest of the Palace of Qianqing in the Forbidden City in Beijing. It was originally a place where Emperor Kangxi studied and studied with Hanlin officials. Candidates are called "South Study Wardens" and the selection criteria are "both talented and talented". They are mainly responsible for drafting edicts, consulting on government affairs and literary attendants. By recruiting Han scribes such as Zhang Ying and Gao Shiqi to participate in confidential affairs, this institution became an important tool for Emperor Kangxi to weaken the power of the Council of Kings and Ministers to discuss political affairs and strengthen the imperial power.
