About Chengzhi Hall

Chengzhitang is located in Hongcun, Yixian County, Anhui Province. It was a private residence built by Wang Dinggui, a salt merchant in the late Qing Dynasty, around 1855. It is known as the "Folk Forbidden City". The entire building covers an area of 2,100 square meters, with a construction area of 3,000 square meters. It contains 60 rooms, 9 patios, and 136 wooden columns. It adopts a brick and wood structure and is divided into inner and outer courtyards, front and rear halls, and east and west wing rooms. It also has functional areas such as a study hall and a fish pond hall. It is reported that its construction cost 600,000 taels of silver and 100 taels of gold for gilding the wood carvings. It took 20 craftsmen four years to complete.
