About Xixing Ancient Town
Xixing Ancient Town is located on the south bank of the Qiantang River in Binjiang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It was called Xiling in ancient times. According to legend, it was built in the Spring and Autumn Period. Qian Liu, King of Wuyue in the Five Dynasties, renamed it Xixing. It belonged to Xiaoshan County, Shaoxing Prefecture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In 1996, it was placed under Binjiang District. The ancient town is the starting point of the East Zhejiang Canal. Historically, it was the gateway to the two Zhejiang provinces and the first stop for entry into East Zhejiang. It now has a two-street and one-river layout and a wooden-structure Jiangnan water town building complex. It has 8 national key cultural heritage sites, including Xixing Guotangxing Wharf. The ancient town prospered because of the canal.
