About Refreshing Terrace
Qingliang Terrace is located in the Baima Temple in Luoyang City, Henan Province. It was originally the place where Liu Zhuang, Emperor Ming of the Han Dynasty, summered and studied when he was young. It later became the place where eminent Indian monks like Mo Teng and Zhu Falan translated scriptures and preached. The first Chinese Buddhist scripture, the Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters, was translated here. The platform is built with green bricks, and ancient cypresses and golden osmanthus are planted in the courtyard. It ranks first among the "six sceneries" of Baima Temple. After the two eminent monks passed away, they were buried on the east and west sides of the mountain gate of Baima Temple. The tombs of Mo Teng and Zhu Falan are now in commemoration. In the Tang Dynasty, starting with Qingliangtai Sutra Translation, Luoyang developed into a center for Buddhist sutra translation.
