About Chongwu Ancient City
Chongwu Ancient City is located at the southern end of the Chongwu Peninsula on the southeastern coast of Huian County, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, facing the Taiwan Strait. Built in the 20th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1387) by Zhou Dexing, the Marquis of Jiangxia to defend against Japanese pirates, it is China’s most intact stone-built ancient city with a “T”-shaped layout. The city walls are entirely constructed from white granite, stretching a total length of 2,467 meters, with a base height of 5 meters and a wall height of 7 meters. It features 26 watchtowers, 5 enemy towers, and a complete military defense system. Over the centuries, the ancient city has witnessed the Battle of Resistance Against Japanese Pirates during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, the anti-Qing campaigns led by Zheng Chenggong, and the War of Resistance Against Japan.
