About Yudetang
Yudetang is a Chaozhou hand-drawn teapot hall founded by Zhang Dengjing (1865-1949), a Chaozhou-Shantou Confucian businessman in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. He came up with the idea of making teapots after his cherished Mengchen teapot broke. In 1916, he began to make teapots and gave them to Southeast Asian business friends. In 1930, the hall was officially established, with "the virtue of magnanimity" as his family motto to pass on the skills. Its hand-drawn pots combine Chaozhou traditional pottery and Yixing purple clay techniques. They were early spread in Southeast Asia as a carrier of overseas Chinese's homesickness culture. The third-generation descendants, Kaikai De and Kaikai Ji, inherited the family skills.
