About Release pool

The life-release pond is a pond facility used in Buddhist temples to stock fish, turtles and other aquatic animals. It embodies the Buddhist concept of "be compassionate and save all living beings". Believers accumulate merit through life-release activities. The earliest life-release pond can be traced back to Baoen Temple in Jiankang (now Nanjing) during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Master Zhizhe, the founder of the Tiantai Sect, initiated believers to raise funds to build a life-release pond and petitioned the court to erect a monument to prohibit arrests, promoting its popularization. According to records, Hui Wen, a monk from the Northern Qi Dynasty, was rescued by a giant tortoise when he was in danger when he led his group to cross the sea. This led to the edict of Baoen Temple.
