About Hong Kong's Return to the Motherland Monument
The Monument for Hong Kong's Return to the Motherland is located in the square north of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (Golden Bauhinia Square). It complements the "Eternally Blooming Bauhinia" sculpture located in the northeast of the square. It was officially completed on July 1, 1999. The monument is 20 meters high and 1.6 meters wide. It is composed of a cornerstone, a column and a copper capital. The front of the column is engraved with the inscription inscribed by President Jiang Zemin, and is made up of 206 stone rings, symbolizing the years from 1842 to 2047. Hong Kong’s development history, including 1842, 1860, 1898, 1982, 1984 and 1990, light-colored stones were used in six years. In 1997, the stone ring was inlaid with a halo and embedded with 32 fiber optic points.
