About folk street
Tianqiao Folk Street is located in the southeast of Xicheng District, Beijing (formerly Xuanwu District), and belongs to the Tianqiao area. "Overpass" originally refers to a white marble single-hole high arch bridge running from north to south. It was named because the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties had to pass through this bridge when they went to the Temple of Heaven to worship heaven. It was demolished in 1934 and the landscape bridge was rebuilt in 2013. This area was a water town during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the Tianqiao Market gradually formed and became an entertainment venue and commodity market for Beijing civilians. It is the birthplace of Beijing folk art. It is famous for folk performances such as folk arts and acrobatics, and has given birth to folk artists such as the "Tianqiao Eight Eccentrics".
