About Baocheng Temple

Baocheng Temple is located at the southeast foot of Wushan Mountain in Ziyang Mountain, Hangzhou. It was originally called Sakyamuni Temple and was founded by Yang, the concubine of Wuyue King during the Five Dynasties and the Later Jin Dynasty. During the reign of Dazhong Xiangfu in the Northern Song Dynasty, it was renamed Baochengyuan. In the fifth year of Baoyou (1257) in the Southern Song Dynasty, it was awarded the title of "Baocheng Temple". The temple preserves the Mayo Ge La statue excavated in the second year of Zhizhi (1322) in the Yuan Dynasty. It is the only existing statue of its kind in China with a clear chronology. In 2001, it was listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit. The temple was built in the Five Dynasties. Inscribed on the cliff behind the temple is a poem "Appreciating Peonies" attributed to Su Shi.
