About Yanyulou Tower

Yanyu Tower is the former residence and main library of Xu Shidong, a famous bibliophile in Ningbo during the Qing Dynasty. The building is named after it is located on "Yanyu", one of the ten continents of Yuehu Lake. It was originally named "Lianhu Library". It was built during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. The main building faces west and faces east. The collection of books once reached 100,000 volumes. During the Xianfeng and Tongzhi years of the Qing Dynasty, the books in the building were burned and looted due to wars, resulting in heavy losses. After Xu Shidong built the "Chengxi Thatched Cottage" and "Shuibei Pavilion" to continue the book collection business.
