About Huayan Temple
Huayan Temple is located at No. 459 Xiasipo Street, Pingcheng District, Datong City, Shanxi Province. It was built in the seventh year of Chongxi of the Liao Dynasty (AD 1038). It is named after the Buddhist classic "Huayan Sutra". It is an older and more complete Liao and Jin temple complex in China. It is also one of the three existing Liao Dynasty temples in China. Huayan Temple is also known as the Great Huayan Temple. According to the Khitan people's custom of worshiping Japan, the temple site faces the west and faces the east. The earliest existing building is the Bojiajiao Tibetan Hall. It was rebuilt in the eighth year of Qingning (1062). In that year, "stone and bronze statues of emperors were enshrined", making it a royal ancestral temple. In the second year of Baoda (1122), the temple was damaged due to war.
