About Niuxin Fortress
Niuxinbao is a Ming Dynasty military castle located at the northern foot of Niuxin Mountain. It is now the seat of Niuxinbao Township Government. It was built during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. It belongs to the Great Wall defense system of Datong Town and is one of the Middle Road or "Six Forts in Yunxi". The fort was built in the Jiajing period to strengthen the defense of the Youwei area and was covered with bricks in the sixth year of Longqing (1572). After the Qing Dynasty, it gradually transformed into a folk settlement. Today, the fort wall is relatively intact and there is a village inside the fort.
