About Qingyitang

Qingyitang is located at the west end of Tangyue Village in She County, Anhui Province. It was founded by salt merchant Bao Qiyun in the 10th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1805). The name of the hall means "innocent, chaste, virtuous, and beautiful". It is the only existing well-preserved ancestral hall specifically for women in China, breaking the old system of "women are not allowed to enter the ancestral hall" in feudal society. The ancestral hall faces south and faces north. It is designed according to the concept of "male stem and female kun" in the Book of Changes. It adopts a layout of three bays and five bays, and its scale exceeds that of the male ancestral hall. The huge plaque "Qingyitang" hung in the main hall was written by the calligrapher Bao Zhen. There is also a horizontal plaque inscribed by Zeng Guofan with the title "Charity and Filial Piety".
