About Lubanyao Grottoes

The Luban Yao Grottoes are located on the south bank of the Shili River about 700 meters west of the Yungang Grottoes in Yungang District, Datong City, Shanxi Province. There are three existing caves, with a total length of 60 meters from north to south, about 4 meters high, and a distribution area of 240 square meters. The grottoes were excavated in the middle of the Northern Wei Dynasty (466-494) and rebuilt in the Liao Dynasty. The Luban Yao Grottoes are located in the west and face east, and are an important part of the Yungang Grottoes. On the outer wall of the grotto are the beam holes dug during the wooden construction during the Liao and Jin Dynasties, which were abandoned after the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Now the land in front of the grotto is broad and flat, and the cliff on the north side of the grotto is neat and artificially repaired.
