About Walnut King Scenic Area
“Walnut King,” the name of the tree. This tree grows in Jianghe Village, Gucheng Town, Luonan County, Shangluo City, with an estimated age of around 1,300 years. It stands 31 meters tall and has a chest circumference of 5 meters. Although it has entered its later years, it still boasts lush branches and abundant leaves. Its historical maximum annual walnut yield was 1,000 jin. In 1980, it produced 335.5 jin of walnuts, making it a “money tree” for several generations of the Yu family. In March 1981, it was designated by the State Forestry Ministry as the “China Walnut King” and was listed as a nationally protected ancient tree of Class I. The Luonan County Government has placed a sign on the tree and erected a monument to protect it. In recent years, local authorities have implemented rescue and revitalization measures, including soil improvement and pest and disease control.
