About Mao Zedong portrait
The huge colorful portrait of Mao Zedong hanging on the Tiananmen Gate Tower in Beijing is the most familiar to all Chinese people and the largest hand-painted portrait of the leader in Asia. Its final version was finalized on October 1, 1967 and continues to this day. The portrait was created by several artists including Zhou Lingzhao, Wang Guodong and Ge Xiaoguang. The main writers include Dong Xiwen (1949), Zhou Lingzhao (Founding Ceremony), Xin Mang (1950), Zhang Zhenshi (1952), Wang Guodong (1967), etc. Ge Xiaoguang has taken over as the main artist since 1977. The image has evolved through 8 versions. It is drawn on wide linen and combines ethnic and Western painting techniques. The details are adjusted through an inverted telescope to ensure that the color is coordinated with the red wall of Tiananmen Square.
