About Longshan Grottoes
The Longshan Grottoes are located in Longshan, Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. They are the largest existing Taoist grottoes in China with the richest themes. They were built in the sixth year of Emperor Taizong of the Yuan Dynasty (1234), covering an area of 1.625 square kilometers. In 1996, they were listed as the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. The grottoes were excavated by the Tang, Yuan and Ming dynasties. There are 9 caves with 65 statues in total, including the Xuhuang niche, Sanqing niche, Woru niche and other caves. Three techniques of round carving, high relief and low relief are used. The caisson is decorated with carvings such as two dragons playing with beads and two phoenixes. The grottoes now have the Santian Master's niche in Cave 4 of the Tang Dynasty and the Xuanzhen niche in Cave 5.
